This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My Pre-Kindergarten students are enthusiastic "college bound" learners! They are intelligent, young students, but the reality is that their socioeconomic status and zip codes put them at an academic disadvantage, as compared to their more affluent peers. They are in dire need of having access to quality materials, both inside and outside of the classroom. However, providing them with the supplies necessary to learn in this context is a struggle due to severe budget cuts.
For most of my students, this is their first experience in a structured learning environment.
I want to be able to make their first learning experience hands-on and fun!
My Project
The past four school years, my assistant and I made welcome bags, and gave them to our students during “Teacher Meet and Greet Night”, and on the first day of school. The book bags each included a book, Play-Doh, flash-cards, bed-time routine checkoff list, a welcome note, and classroom handbook and pamphlet. This welcome gift has been greatly appreciated by both students and parents. The gift fosters excitement towards school and learning in the students and provides parents with some academic resources to use at home. In addition, the gesture provides a way to build immediate positive and caring relationships with families at the very start of the school year. Many parents are apprehensive and anxious at the start of the school year due to previous negative school experiences and/or this being the child’s first time away from home. We would love to be able to provide our students, next year, with welcome bags, again, to help make this transition positive and supportive for everyone.
The book, play-doh, and math flash cards that we are requesting will be given directly to the students and parents at the start of the year, as part of their welcome gift to our classroom and school.
The Velcro and markers will be used to create the bed-time routine checkoff list that they can hang on their refrigerator at home. The postcards will be sent off over the summer to welcome students Pre-K! We are requesting Transition backpacks to also hand out to our students.
My students are always positive and enthusiastic "college bound" learners. We want to be able to provide them with the materials needed to positively support them in their first school experience, and academic journey. Please help provide my students, and parents, with the tools needed to be successful, motivated learners.
