Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
STARS stands for Students Taking Action and Reaching Success.
The STARS Classroom is a 1st-3rd grade classroom.
Half of the students are students with special needs and the other half are traditional students who are good role models and help support the students with special needs. We have a multiple age (1st, 2nd, 3rd grade) and multiple ability (Autism, learning disability, multiple disability, low cognitive, etc.) classroom where every student is different and has their own learning style. Our goal is to help the students with special needs become independent so that by the time they are in the 4th grade they can transition into a general education classroom. We believe in inclusion at our school, and as teachers we provide lessons and materials that help support our students.
My Project
The STARS Classroom has about 16 students, 2 teachers and 2 paraprofessionals. There is small group or one-on-one support for the students. However, although we have a lot of adult support, we do need materials to help support each student and their individual learning style. We need a classroom storage center so that each student has their own space for their materials. We also need book boxes for each student so that they may have their own individual books to read during reading time and dry erase boards for individual writing responses. In addition, we need sentence strips and pocket charts so the students may write stories/poems and hang them on the wall during writing.
The donations will help to keep our classroom clean, organized, calm and a fun environment for our students to work in.
The donations will also help provide individual instruction for each learning style, because the students are getting their needs met. This will help change the students' lives by building their confidence and preparing them for the transition to the general education classroom.
