Our school serves students in grades K-8 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment. Our goal is to prepare our students for success in high school and college. Our school has a very diverse population with ninety-eight percent receiving free breakfast and lunch in a total population of about five hundred and fifty students.
My students are a wonderful group of engaged and excited fourth-grade students, eager to learn, create and innovate.
Many of them have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. My class serves students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a third-grade level and struggles with basic phonics and number sense. Seventy percent of our students are Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population.
My Project
My students will use the classroom set of headphones for many uses. They will use them for individual projects, research, and assessments. With these headphones, students will be able to listen to reading and watch videos. They will be able to focus on their own work instead of hearing 25 other students computers.
My project will make a difference because currently most of my students might have available is a few earbud headphones.
These headphones break easily and are painful to young, growing ears. With these new headphones, my students will have more opportunities. They will be focused and more productive in the classroom.
My students are going through a growth spurt, and our old scissors are not comfortable or functional anymore, so many students don't have a scissors to use. As their hands have gotten larger, the old scissors from primary grades are not working for them.
When we have materials to cut out for our notebooks, the patience of my students is tested because there is not enough scissors to use in the classroom. My students do not have the patience or tolerance to wait for their peers to finish with the "good" scissors that I have, so we need additional scissors for them to use.
