Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is part of a very large, urban school district with a very diverse student population. Our school is a dual-language Spanish Immersion magnet, in which all students in the school receive half of their instruction in English and half of their instruction in Spanish.
By the time they become sixth graders, nearly all of the students are bilingual.
Our school serves students in grades K-6 and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers and a safe learning environment.
Our school serves ESL and special education students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, sensory disorders, anxiety, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder, and specific learning disabilities. Teaching students sensory processing and self-regulation are two powerful components to support student achievement. These hard-working students strive every day to meet their own individualized academic and social goals.
My Project
There are a few students in my class who have a difficult time staying seated while learning something new or working on classwork. With a standing desk my students would have the ability to stand at an appropriate level desk and do their work without distracting themselves or others. Students learn better when they have a chance to work together and traditional seating prevents students to sit close to one another.
By having a standing desk available to them, students are given another option of where and how they work in class.
A standing desk will also help prepare my students for real life social situations.
With a standing desk in my classroom, my students would have flexible seating options, giving them the opportunity to work in their best environment.
Some of my students do their best work while standing up, but at a regular desk they are either hindered by being seated or are hunched over their desk while standing. With a standing desk the students who need it could greatly benefit from this option.
