My Project

My Physical Science students are curious, energetic learners who understand science best when they have opportunities to see, touch, test, and experience the concepts we study. Across my four Physical Science classes, students bring a wide range of abilities and experiences to the classroom, but hands-on investigations give every student an opportunity to participate and experience success. I want my students to see themselves as scientists who can ask questions, make predictions, investigate ideas, and use evidence to explain what they observe.

With these materials, my students will literally stretch their understanding of science by creating and investigating their own Silly Putty.

The glue, activator, measuring supplies, mixing materials, and other laboratory items will allow students to explore polymers and properties of matter through an experience they will remember. Students will measure ingredients, observe changes, test elasticity and other physical properties, collect data, and investigate how changing variables affects the final product. Instead of simply reading about matter and chemical and physical changes, students will have the concepts directly in their hands.

My goal is to turn a fun activity into meaningful scientific inquiry. Students will make predictions, follow procedures, measure accurately, identify variables, compare results, and support conclusions with evidence. They will also collaborate, troubleshoot, and discover that science does not always produce exactly the result we expect. Your support will help create the kind of classroom I want for my students—one where we do not just learn about science; we do science!
