My students need softball supplies for our annual parents/teachers/students softball game.
This project expired on November 28, 2012.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
Over 45% of all children are overweight. The U.S. Health Council stresses the importance of physical activity is a huge problem for most children in the United States. Each year I teach my class how to play softball: the rules, positions, fielding, hitting - we are in need of supplies to continue
My students are a varied group of children from all cultural, economical, and educational backgrounds.
Their exposure to team sports varies from none to those children who are active participants in team sports. This also reflects the varied degree of sportsmanship, team building and ability to cooperate, make concessions and work for the "good of the team" . Last year, a large portion of my students would probably be considered overweight - some with back problems that seemed due to a combination of weight issues and a lack of physical activity.
It is my hope to build team spirit, sportsmanship and physical fitness through playing softball throughout the year. Through this team sport, I would work on cooperation, sportsmanship, physical activity and the benefits of consistent exercise, conditioning and team sports which would hopefully not only support the students in their physical health now but throughout their lives.
Children spend exorbitant amounts of time in front of the TV - physical activity is greatly limited and recess doesn't always provide an opportunity for this - playing team sports and the benefits that come with it, I think will provide students with an opportunity to learn, grow and deepen their experience at school and their opportunities outside of it.
