This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For a number of years now our school has had access to the Internet to do research, but the frustrating part was the inability of students to print color images to use in displays or to use in research projects including the art of the various styles of visual artists. Shades of gray no more!

My third grade students attend an urban school in Southern California trying to survive continuing budget cuts.

My students are second language learners of English with parents working long hours outside the home. School provides the exposure to the world outside their front door. Parents work hard to provide the basics for their children, however doing research projects pose challenges in accessing Internet resources even at school. Our Program Improvement school of 785 students has improved our CST scores consistently in spite of a shrinking budget. Staffing for our computer lab has been reduced and even when my students get into the computer lab and find valuable information or images there is no color printer for them to print those images. My students' next theme in Language Arts will be to explore how artists and writers express themselves. My students are enthusiastic about learning and yearn for the type of self expression exploring the visual arts would allow.

My Project

For my project I am requesting a multi-function color printer and ink and a book exploring visual artists and their remarkable styles. The culminating project will be to produce their own bound Artist Color and Style Book, each page will display their color copy of the artist work, a short biography of the artist, and the student's own art product in the color and style of the artist. In the first part of the project, each student will research an artist on our classroom computer and print a color copy representative of the artist's work. Students will then reproduce their own art piece using the color and style of the artist. The students will share their Artist Color and Style Book with parents at Student Led Conferences. The power of a color printer with multi-functions doesn't stop in the study of Art. It also means that they will be able to scan images they find in books, duplicating the images for use in displays and presentations in social studies and science projects.

When is the last time you went shopping for a black and white television or computer monitor? Many of us as adults can't wait to get the amazing color of a flat panel television. The challenge of preparing our students for the 21st century must include access to that technology. With your donation you have to power to set the domino effect of learning in motion.
