Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students with Autism need materials to assist them in self regulating their individual sensory needs.
I teach a classroom for students in grades kindergarten to second with a diagnosis of autism. This is a pilot program addressed to meet the individualized needs of each student. The school is creating an inclusive environment for students with autism throughout all grade levels and abilities in hopes it can be a model for many districts.
A major need for students with autism is learning how to regulate their own sensory needs through movement, pressure, and balance. There is a need for supplies that will allow students to independently seek and fulfill this need. The classroom currently has bean bags, pillows, mats, and a small trampoline, but is in need of items to help students with their balance and pressure needs.
The two items I would like to add to the sensory area of the classroom, (which is open to any student in the school who may need it) is a Rodeosell and a SpaceWalk.
The Rodeosell is a large spinner which encourages children to turn, spin, and balance while they are spinning. It helps to increase vestibular stimulation and equilibrium.
The SpaceWalk is a large motor activity that can be used in many ways. Students can walk, crawl, roll, and jump on it. It can be used for students to roll themselves up in to provide pressure or can be used to walk on to increase balance and coordination.
These two items will have a positive impact on students with autism in aiding them to learn to provide sensory regulations that they need to concentrate on school activities.
With your generous donation, you will be helping students with autism learn how to regulate their own sensory needs. This is a major need for these students. With their sensory needs met, they can better concentrate on their academic learning, increase their independence, and improve their quality of life.
Thank you so much for your consideration
