This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Energetic, trendy, and seeking to be world changers is how I describe the students at this Middle Magnet school. Though an urban school serving approximately 617 students in which 93% of its population lives below poverty level and 40% speak a second language, the students are striving to compete and maintain in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) competitions. Driven by their love of technology and challenge, they seek to explore various avenues.
In spite of all this drive, the technological tools to engage, interact and support their need is often unavailable or outdated for the students to maintain their motivation and be a part of the competition.
With hopes of providing additional tech opportunities and updated tools, students will jump in and participate in more technology focused competitions to enhance their STEM academic knowledge. This grant will provide technology tools with lessons through club meetings to push them to higher heights.
My Project
Using Lego SPIKE Prime, students will meet for STEM HUB club in the media center biweekly, to engage in challenges that explore their sense of creativity and design. These materials will make a difference in students learning because they will be used to support students in building self-confidence and academic growth in STEM subjects. Lego reports only 1 out of every 5 students experience confidence with STEAM subjects, which is often what students say here report. Additionally, these tools allow students to experience learning through hands on exploration and make real world connections through coding and prototyping. For example, students can create a robot and code it to move according to light and beats which addresses standards of ratio concepts and reasoning. Through STEM club experiences using LEGO SPIKE Prime, it is hoped, these middle schoolers will find increased success with STEM and applied science standards.
