Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an inner city public school special education program in Springfield. The program offers small group support for special education students so they can access the general curriculum like their peers.
As a special education cohort, we work just as much on social emotional skills as we do academics.
Group projects, hand on manipulatives, and visual supports work best to promote our learning. The students work hard to overcome their learning challenges. I love their perseverance, tenacity, and willingness to try new things.
My Project
All students want to understand geometric solids and their applications to real life, but not every student is able to do this in the same way. My special education students need a variety of materials to learn mathematical and social skills. The materials I've chosen for my project are intended to set up a collaborative classroom environment that address various student learning styles and different modalities.
The dry erase charts & markers increase engagement; they allow students with dysgraphia to access writing tasks more easily and allow visually impaired students to have larger visuals.
The geometric solids allow students to explore a physical model and unwrap the nets while headphones support auditory learners.
