My Special Education classroom is for Social-Emotional Learners at the elementary age level. My students are a remarkable group of young people that are learning to navigate the word amidst trauma, instability, and poverty. Our little classroom family is a safe place where they can learn to regulate their emotions, express themselves appropriately, and be empowered in all academic and personal settings in life. My students are learning to trust and love those that are trustworthy. It is truly a beautiful thing!
Our program went through some big changes last school year and we were moved to a new classroom with limited furniture, curriculum, sensory tools, and supplies that our class needs to be successful.
We need your help to build up our program so that my students have the best possible chance of learning and building their personal confidence.
Each day we work hard, because we know that the only thing that works, is work! And each day we remind ourselves of important affirmations: we are loved, lovable, and loving. This social emotional work is pivotal to the success of my students and has the potential to completely change the trajectory of their lives.
My Project
Our small elementary school is Title I and needs all the support we can get from the community for supplies that support our students in their growth and learning. The Special Education team is seeking to develop a sensory room, where all students can go for a break, that will provide our most vulnerable students with the sensory stimulation or sensory break they need to get back to learning quickly and painlessly. This room will and the adjacent outdoor play area will allow students a safe place.
Research confirms that trauma changes the human brain and it is our hope that the use of the sensory room will help our students find peaceful, mindful ways to let out their emotions safely and with dignity.
The listening center will allow students the opportunity to listen to an audio-book or calming music in order to relax their minds. The various floor mats, including the piano, crash pad, and sensory exercise mat will allow students sensory stimulation to get out their anxiety and release their mind from the loop of negative thinking they may have at that moment. The aromatherapy diffuser allows us to diffuse the mild scent of lavender in the room which has calming effects. The light filters allow us to use the fluorescent lights in the room, but cover them for a softer light in the room- many students with special needs are triggered by the constant stimulation of the school lights- they provide a sensory break. The wobble stools allow for another sensory stimulation in the room and can help students to calm their bodies. The outdoor storage bench lets us have a place for "heavy work" storage.
This project will deeply impact our Special Education students in the most positive ways!
