In first grade, hands-on learning is essential, and these resources have opened up new pathways for exploration, creativity, and problem-solving. Each day, students use these materials during our STEM and math centers to build structures, experiment with balance and symmetry, count, sort, and even tell stories through what they create. What may look like play is truly powerful learning, students are practicing teamwork, spatial reasoning, perseverance, and critical thinking. These tools have transformed our classroom into a space where curiosity leads the way and where my young learners can turn their ideas into reality through building and design.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the brand-new STEM bins filled with tiles and blocks, their excitement was uncontainable. They gathered around, pointing and whispering ideas about what they wanted to build castles, bridges, playgrounds, and even imaginary cities. Many of them had never used materials like these before, and to see such possibilities in their hands brought pure joy. I explained to them that these materials were given by someone who believes in their potential, and we talked about using them gently, responsibly, and with purpose. Now, during center time, I watch students collaborate, test ideas, and proudly share their creations with classmates. These materials have created a strong sense of community in our room, encouraging students not only to build with their hands but also to build confidence, patience, and resilience.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these STEM resources will continue to support our goals in math, science, and inquiry-based learning. We are beginning a new unit where students will design and build solutions to simple problems like creating a shelter for an animal or a bridge that can hold weight, and these materials allow us to bring those lessons to life. They also serve as inspiration for writing, where students draw and write about what they built and the challenges they overcame. Because of your generosity, my classroom is now a place where innovation thrives and where every child feels empowered to think like an engineer, a designer, and a creator. Thank you for giving my students the chance to explore, imagine, and dream bigger through STEM.","fullyFundedDate":1749136921187,"projectUrl":"project/empty-to-empowered-building-our-dream-c/9377451/","projectTitle":"Empty to Empowered: Building Our Dream Classroom","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Toey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10037536_orig.jpg?crop=1043,1044,x0,y66&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1747514112349","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10037536"},{"teacherId":10037536,"projectId":9361747,"letterContent":"I cannot express enough how deeply grateful I am for your kindness and generosity in funding our classroom project. As a first-year first-grade teacher in a brand-new classroom, beginning the school year with limited supplies was one of my greatest challenges. Thanks to you, my students now have access to essential tools such as markers, crayons, colored pencils, magnetic tiles, and STEM building sets. That open doors for creativity, curiosity, and meaningful learning. These materials are not just supplies; they are opportunities. In our classroom, art and hands-on learning are woven into everything we do. For example, my students are currently creating their own mini animal books, and without these resources, their pages would be empty and colorless. Instead, they are filled with vibrant drawings, labeled facts, and artistic expression, allowing each child to proudly share their knowledge in their own unique voice. Our STEM activities, like magnetic tiles and brain flake puzzles, have also become a favorite part of the day. These tools spark problem-solving, teamwork, and imaginative thinking as students follow guidebooks to design structures and objects. It has been incredibly powerful to see how your support has transformed simple lessons into joyful, unforgettable experiences.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their reactions were priceless. Their eyes lit up with excitement, and many gasped in disbelief that they would each have their very own set of crayons or markers—not shared, but personally theirs. For many of my students, this was the first time they had brand-new supplies to call their own. They immediately began imagining what they wanted to create, some talking about drawing their families, others their favorite animals or vehicles. I took this special moment to explain how meaningful these gifts are, and we had a class conversation about taking care of our supplies the same way we take care of ourselves and one another. We practice using them with respect and responsibility, and I model what it looks like to use them thoughtfully. Your generosity has created not only excitement but also a sense of pride and ownership in my students. They know that someone out there believes in them, and that has made them feel seen and valued.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, these resources will continue to support our biggest goals in first grade, especially in literacy and writing. One of my favorite items you helped provide was a trifold board, which now stands proudly at our writing station. I've filled it with helpful tools such as sight word lists, alphabet charts, and spelling strategies, turning it into a literacy hub where students can go for encouragement and independence. As we build our writing stamina, students will use their crayons and colored pencils to add illustrations, labels, and details to their stories, making their writing come alive. We will also use our STEM resources during our Friday \"Challenge Time,\" where students collaborate to build and write about their creations—connecting engineering with storytelling. Because of your generosity, my classroom is not just a place of learning, but a place of inspiration. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for giving my students the chance to dream, create, and grow. Your support has made a lasting impact, and we will carry your kindness with us every single day.","fullyFundedDate":1747845741900,"projectUrl":"project/supplies-for-success-in-first-grade/9361747/","projectTitle":"Supplies for Success in First Grade","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Toey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10037536_orig.jpg?crop=1043,1044,x0,y66&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1747514112349","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10037536"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_44430","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":264,"numTeachers":24,"percentFrplEligible":75,"percentAsian":9,"percentBlack":18,"percentWhite":30,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"11.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":85.3,"schoolId":44430,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about James Baldwin Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"James Baldwin Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/washington/district-one-seattle-public-schools/northgate-elementary-school/44430"}
