My Project

I'm a special education teacher in an elementary school in Connecticut. I work with a diverse population of students with various needs. I'm looking to create hands-on materials that can be used to foster academic enrichment and build reading and math success for students who have disabilities. In addition to having math and reading disabilities, some students that I work with also have social and emotional traumas. Some of the ways they learn best are through play and positive reinforcement. Having reading and math games that make learning fun and engaging can help me not only build strong relationships with students but also help them engage in areas they find challenging. These students also benefit from having fidgets to help them focus during academic tasks they feel are overwhelming.

My goal is to be able to create lessons that have visuals I can laminate and label for them that they can use in the special education setting and their classrooms.

Being able to create durable materials is essential to being sure they last for students. The more practice they have using strategies tied with concrete visuals the greater the chances they will be successful. When they start to feel successful it allows for them to engage more in the learning process.
