Special Ed and English Language Learners Need Materials

My students need books, realia and hands-on materials to increase comprehension of terms in English.

My Students

State standards are a mile wide and an inch deep. My students have to learn English and content and they have also qualified for Special Education. These same students are expected to pass the state test for our school to make Annual Yearly Progress. Let's help them get there!

I teach Special Education in an inclusive setting assisting students with English as a 2nd Language and Special Education needs.

These students carry a wealth of backgrounds, ideas, creativity and determination. They want to do well, they want to understand and join in showing what they know. One way for me to support them in doing that is to use realism (clay, materials, stuff) and creativity to enhance comprehension through hands-on activities modeling current topics.

My Project

We will use the science books, wall model and DVD materials to outline: how to take a look at all this info, break it into pieces - draw, sculpt, write - to explain it visually, understand through discussion, and then individual written paragraphs. This project will be the model for all other upcoming projects that the students will be given. "Remember what we did with the Earthquake project?" The students will have a road map and become more independent.

Kimball Elm has 66% assistance with the federal school lunch program.

Many families have moved here from other countries, our students need extra supports in order to comprehend both English and content. By supporting Inclusion success for these students, it makes school more enjoyable for all the students. Ask anyone if they had 2 teachers in a room if they liked it better than just 1 teacher. Inclusion benefits everyone, and this project will get my students prepared for classroom success.
