My Students

I teach sixth grade English language arts to a great group of kids in Brooklyn. I have an amazing group of kids who get so excited about the characters in the books we read that they shout their enthusiastic answers in class. I love that they are passionate about books and know this is my gift to give them, the love of reading.

We work every day in groups, both big and small, to build each other up.

Maybe we're creating travel brochures for settings of our books or slideshow decks of Greek gods and goddesses. We may be devising arguments to encourage people to adopt pets instead of buying them from pet stores or writing scripts to create news stories to help other students understand the plight of endangered species.

My Project

This remote learning thing is hard. On everybody involved. Everyday. My kids are smart and hardworking, They're in the gifted program. I don't know if that makes remote learning more difficult or not. I've been trying my best to keep some semblance of normalcy during this time. Who knows if I'm succeeding.

Who doesn't like getting a present?

My hope is a goody bag with a journal, pencil and bookmark will keep my kids' spirits up. Many of the kids are unsure how to feel, what to do or how to express their feelings right now. Maybe the journals will help them channel their thoughts into something positive. I'll deliver these goody bags to their homes and hopefully bring a little happiness to this uncertain time.
