Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Debate is the most incredible academic opportunity! The problem is that it is also one of the most expensive and our local league collapsed and so thanks to DonorsChoose.org and investors like you we are trying to keep our league going! In March we have our High School City Championships. Help!
Our school is typical of most public school debate teams.
We are located next to the Bronx jail where there is a daily line of inmates coming in and out. On the other side of the street is the criminal court where there is a daily line of criminal cases. The South Bronx is known more for poverty, crime, drugs, gangs, and failing schools than academic opportunities. However, five years ago our school started a debate team âÂ" the only school in the South Bronx with a debate team. It has grown to nearly 100 students from grades 7th-12th. Their academic abilities range from special education to valedictorian. Their backgrounds range from abuse, mental institutionalization to perfect attendance. Their behavior ranges from regularly suspended to model student. But they are all united by their passion and love for debating. They spend their days learning about debate, evenings in debate practice, weekends at debate tournaments and summers at debate camps. And this is just one such team!
My Project
Our school sponsors the end-of-the-year Championship Tournament and we are requesting beautiful gavel awards. Students love competition, awards and trophies - and this is the best motivation for learning - fun and competition!
The City Championships is our culminating tournament of the year where the best of the best receive citywide recognition! Our students and every student from across New York City high schools is invited to compete against the best of the best. And we can't do this without awards! As a teacher and a parent, there is nothing better than seeing a student win their first academic award! They will be lifelong learners! Especially when they are "City Champions!"
In the past these tournaments have been sponsored by other organizations but because of the economy and other issues they will not be able to support the City Championships this year. So we turn to DonorsChoose.org and investors like you!
Debate is an incredible activity for students!
It teaches students valuable skills in public speaking, research, logic, argumentation, debate, reading, writing, note taking, and analysis. It teaches knowledge that is not covered in traditional schools and the "common core" - philosophy, political science, current events, economics, all the social sciences, critical theory, and a number of other subjects that the average student won't even hear until college! So please support our Great Debaters!
