I remember coming in the first day of class and having a discussion with my class about what they would like to see to make this project come alive.\r\n\r\nOne student mentioned that he would like to have a lab coat to really \"play the part\" of an actual chemist. I let him know that this year, he is a beginning student chemist. I went on to search for ways to obtain the lab coats for my smallest class and it seemed a bit cost prohibitive to come directly from me. Donors Choose stood in the gap for my students. They happen to have neurodivergent learning styles; however, it does not stop them from learning and thriving. \r\n\r\nThe lab coats gave them sich a confidence boost. It was something so unexpected. I am so happy that this wish could become a reality. Someone actually believed in their potential. As a result, the students come in ready to go and I am forever grateful. When the boxes arrived in the class we were so excited I had to pause the TED Talk and immediately turned the unboxing into an impromptu ensemble project. Without prompting, students broke into small groups: some worked on assembling the rods, others unfolded and threaded the curtains. One of my quieter students came alive as he figured out and became an instant pro on how to install the spring rods on the window frames. In that moment it was confirmed that technical theatre is his entry point.\r\n\r\nThe curtains made an immediate impact. Students noticed right away how much better they could see the Smartboard/ video clips without the glare from the sun. Even something as simple as watching a TED Talk became a clearer and a more focused learning experience. The next day, students from other classes walked in and exclaimed, \"Miss, you got the curtains already?!\" One even volunteered to crochet custom curtain ties, which was an idea I never even thought of.
