My students need a Cheap Talk, tactile cards with actual objects, and 4 Go Talk Ones to give them the ability to communicate their wants and needs.

My Students

Have you ever lost your voice? If you've ever been unable to communicate verbally and been forced to communicate using signs or gestures, how often was your message understood correctly? Well, imagine going through this torture daily-do you want to scream and throw a tantrum? So do my students!!

I work with a group of Kindergarten through 2nd grade students with special needs.

Many are nonverbal or have very little verbal communication. Most of my students have Autism, although I also have a little girl in my class with multiple disabilities. She is deaf and blind and is just learning to walk. My students use sign language as well as picture symbols to communicate. When their needs/wants are not understood, they may display behaviors that show their frustration. Although this doesn't make them any less lovable, it does make it frustrating and difficult to fulfill their wants/needs when you can’t understand what it is they desire.

My Project

I am requesting a Cheap Talk so that I can add actual objects to the buttons and use it as a device to include my nonverbal students and my student who is deaf/blind in our circle time. Although she will not be able to hear the voice output the other students will. They are very loving and love to encourage each other with hugs when they get the answer correct. I am requesting the 4 Go Talks to stimulate and encourage the communication of my students with Autism. I can add picture symbols to the devices (such as bathroom, water, or snack) to promote communication and interaction with others. I am requesting the tactile cards so the student who is deaf and blind can express her wants and needs for food/snack items as well as using them for academic tasks.

When students with Autism can’t express their needs or wants, they feel extremely frustrated.

This impacts their ability to participate in meaningful academic and social activities. Students with Autism learn better and are less confused when information is presented visually as well as verbally. Help make the project a reality and give a voice to those who can't speak.
