Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am the teacher-librarian at a pre-k to 5th grade public school in El Paso, TX, where students are given the opportunity to learn English, Spanish and German. At this time, we are serving 431 students, including 10 dual language and two special education classrooms, with more than 86.54% of our students coming from economically disadvantaged homes.

Our campus serves students from a low-income apartment complex.

Despite any academic and social difficulties our Explorers may experience at home and at school, I am proud to share that they are encouraged by our caring and hard-working teachers and staff.

At this time, I am looking to update our Spanish school library collection to help our pre-k and kindergarten students develop their social emotional skills, as well as promote pleasure reading. By reading these picture books, students will be able to identify the causes of conflict and the effect on characters' feelings, as well as learn that words and actions have consequences. Also, by making personal connections with the book characters, students will be able to discuss with classmates how they can apply healthy coping skills in stressful situations and better understand others' needs. In addition, I am looking to add flexible shelving to house these and other picture books in the pre-k and kinder section.
