This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students attend an urban public school with over seven hundred children, 96% receive free or reduced price lunch. About one third of our students are English Language Learners from diverse backgrounds. About a third of my class have speech or learning disabilities. Do to the lack of in school learning since COVID began my students were not exposed to basic materials to build a strong foundation in reading and writing. Our school lacks Spanish materials needed for my students to strengthen their skills and it is very rare when we get useful Spanish material that we can apply in our classroom.

My Project

Having these materials in my classroom will provide my students daily opportunities to strengthen their Spanish reading foundation skills during our Guided Center Groups. I normally have printed Spanish centers that I make and laminate myself but they only last a few weeks and then begin to fall apart. These concrete materials will allow my students to really engage with the materials and practice building and reading Spanish words and sentences. Some of the material will help my low students that come from other countries that are just learning their letters and sounds as this is their first year in school. COVID has greatly affected my students opportunity to learn but with these centers I will be able to push my students into practicing and taking control of their learning as we rotate and practice different skills.
