Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach Spanish 1 to middle schoolers. At this age, I have to engage them by creating lessons and assignments that are meaningful and interactive. One way that I help my students speak and write in Spanish correctly is to color-code the words by part of speech.

When we write sentences, students use highlighters to accentuate nouns pink, adjectives orange, verbs green, and prepositions purple.

This helps them visualize sentence structure by seeing the colored pattern. Also, I like to use colored cardstock paper to make flashcards following the same Parts of Speech color code. This helps students build sentences using the colored pattern to ensure proper word order.

This year, I'd like to include reading relevant literature using a novel at their level. I think this would encourage them to see language outside of grammar lessons. Immersion in literature will help them develop language in a meaningful way. I'd like one copy of each to preview and to potentially order a class set.
