Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I love my first grade students for their curiosity, kindness, and pride in who they are. They come to school eager to share their ideas, their languages, and their cultures. Many of my students are developing literacy in two languages, and they show incredible perseverance as they learn to read, write, and make meaning in Spanish and English. They support one another, celebrate small successes, and bring so much joy and heart into our classroom every day.

The Spanish books in this project will directly support my students as emerging bilingual readers.

These texts will give students access to grade-level content in Spanish, allowing them to practice foundational reading skills such as decoding, fluency, and comprehension in their stronger language while building confidence as readers. Having high quality Spanish books available in our classroom library will encourage daily independent reading and meaningful discussions about stories, characters, and ideas.

These books will also serve as mirrors that reflect my students’ identities and lived experiences, helping them feel seen and valued, and as windows that introduce them to new perspectives. By engaging with culturally relevant Spanish texts, students will strengthen their vocabulary, oral language, and love of reading while developing a positive bilingual identity. This project will ensure my students have equitable access to books that honor their language and help them grow as confident, capable readers.
