Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come to my classroom with unique perspectives and a curiosity of the world around them. One thing I love about being a teacher is the mutual sharing of knowledge between my students and me. Their willingness to engage in discussion and learning is infectious and encouraging. Despite their age, they have taught me so much about the world around us, and I'm always excited to see what they will contribute to class that day!

These future world-changers deserve the best educational opportunities possible.

However, there are many obstacles to overcome. Our school is located in an area of Oklahoma City with a high concentration of poverty. Many of my students come to school lacking in some way, whether it be physically or emotionally. My hope as a teacher is to provide a learning environment where students can not only learn effectively, but where students can also feel safe and loved.

My Project

I am excited to embark on the Reggio Emilia approach to learning with my first graders this year! This approach is child-centered and directed, which means learning is driven by students' interests, ideas, questions, and observations. An important aspect of this approach is the classroom as the third teacher. Students need an inviting environment that encourages self-expression and develop their imagination. A Reggio-inspired classroom creates an intentional atmosphere that helps children unlock their potential, while also engaging them in learning.

Realizing how important the classroom environment is in learning, I hope to create a space that will foster my students' curiosity that will drive their learning.

To create this space, my classroom will need areas that pique students' interest and excite them. With these materials, I will be able to present students with opportunities to build and create, provide students with different seating choices that will motivate their learning, and ensure that my classroom is clutter-free with the different storage tools. I am eager to see how my incoming first graders will engage with their new learning space, and I can't wait to see all the magnificent memories they will create!
