My Project

My Anatomy and Physiology students love exploring the human body through hands-on activities that connect science to the real world. To make our unit on the senses unforgettable, I want to introduce Tastysound audio lollipops — candy that uses bone conduction technology to play music while you eat. This will let students explore how the nervous system processes multiple senses at once, looking at how vibrations travel through the bones of the skull to the inner ear while taste signals are processed on the tongue. Students will design and conduct experiments, collect and analyze data, and test variables like bone contact points and ear canal blockage to see how each factor affects sound transmission and sensory perception.

Students will take on the roles of scientists and engineers, investigating how the senses work while connecting their learning to real-world STEM careers.

They will explore professions like audiology, biomedical engineering, neuroscience, and product design, identifying the skills, tools, and methods used in each field. Students will then design experiments and prototypes that mirror professional practices, seeing how engineers and scientists solve problems, test variables, and refine designs. Through student-led discussion and reflection, they will analyze how their work aligns with tasks performed in these careers, making the connection between hands-on exploration and professional pathways clear and meaningful.

Finally, students will extend their role as scientists and engineers into the community by running a booth at our school’s STEAM Night in the spring. They will teach their peers, younger students, and families how bone conduction technology works, share the science behind their experiments and designs, and inspire others to see the connections between curiosity, creativity, and innovation. By combining experimentation, design, and research with public engagement, this candy becomes an engaging, authentic learning opportunity for STEM career exploration, scientific discovery, and problem-solving.
