In this project, my students stepped into the roles of real-life medical investigators—solving puzzles, conducting hands-on experiments, and exploring the human body as cardiologists, biomedical engineers, and surgeons. By combining elements of escape rooms and game-based learning, students navigated giant body maps, unlocked clues with puzzle boxes, and interpreted diagnostic data to determine patient outcomes. These activities created a highly interactive environment where students were not just learning content, but actively applying it in meaningful and memorable ways.\r\n\r\nThrough the use of real lab tools, diagnostic kits, and mentor resources, students built critical thinking, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while exploring diverse careers in medicine and STEM. They analyzed X-rays, simulated patient monitoring, modeled blood flow, and made strategic decisions within realistic constraints, mirroring real-world clinical scenarios. Mentor cards highlighting pioneers like Dr. Charles Drew and Dr. Jane Cooke Wright helped students see themselves reflected in these fields and understand the impact of innovation in healthcare. My students loved the opportunity to engage in hands-on ecosystem investigations, and I saw them become more curious and invested as they explored how small environmental changes can determine whether an ecosystem thrives or collapses. Because of your generosity, I was able to provide materials that allowed students to collect data, test environmental conditions, and analyze how biotic and abiotic factors interact. Students built and maintained their own ecosystem models using self-watering wick systems and monitored conditions with aquarium thermometers. The storage bins were perfect for our modified EcoColumn setups, giving organisms more space and creating a more humane, stable environment while allowing students to better observe environmental changes. We are still monitoring our ecosystems, and students have remained highly engaged—many even named their fish, snails, and plants—as they track growth, temperature changes, and other abiotic factors. They have been so invested that they want to continue the project through the end of the semester. Clearly labeled materials also helped keep investigations organized and focused, and everyday tools like the electric stapler and pencil sharpener kept our lab work running smoothly.\r\n\r\nThrough these experiences, my students are developing strong skills in scientific inquiry, data collection, analysis, and problem-solving. They have worked collaboratively, communicated their findings, and taken on leadership roles during investigations. What might look like \"just a computer\" became a publishing studio, research hub, revision station, and storytelling center for my 9th graders.\r\n\r\nThis year, students completed a major research project titled \"Who Changes the World?\" where they investigated historical and modern change agents, analyzed their impact, and wrote evidence-based essays explaining how individuals influence society. The iMac allowed students to conduct deeper research, organize their sources, draft with focus, and most importantly, revise their work in ways that felt professional and meaningful. They weren't just typing assignments. They were crafting arguments, refining ideas, and seeing their writing as real work worthy of publishing and pride.\r\n\r\nDuring our Romeo and Juliet unit, the iMac became a space where students translated Shakespeare's complex themes into modern writing. They composed analytical essays, created modern day character profiles, and even drafted alternative scene rewrites that connected the play's conflicts to issues they see in their own lives. Having access to a high quality desktop environment changed how seriously they approached their writing. Students asked to use it during lunch, after class, and during independent work time because they felt like \"real writers\" sitting there.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, technology at home is limited to phones and in school laptops with missing keys. Writing an essay on a phone is frustrating and discouraging. The iMac gave them a distraction-free, professional space where they could think clearly, organize their ideas, and fully engage in the writing process from drafting to revising to publishing.\r\n\r\nWhat excited them most was not just the screen or the keyboard it was the feeling that their voices mattered enough to deserve real tools. Students who normally rush through assignments slowed down. They reread their work. They revised without being asked. They took ownership.\r\n\r\nSeveral students who struggle with focus and confidence became especially attached to the iMac. One student who rarely completes writing assignments asked every day if it was their turn to use \"the publishing computer.\" Another student used it to type a personal narrative they later asked to share with the class. The pride on their faces was unforgettable.\r\n\r\nThis project truly created what we hoped for: a classroom publishing hub where student voices are nurtured, taken seriously, and shared with pride.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping my students see themselves not just as students completing assignments, but as authors with something important to say.","fullyFundedDate":1760725792152,"projectUrl":"project/young-writers-big-dreams-help-us-publish/9553755/","projectTitle":"Young Writers Big Dreams Help Us Publish Our Stories","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Stokes","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3349822_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1508703077408","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/alisia-stokes"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_98911","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":808,"numTeachers":48,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":95,"percentWhite":1,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"16.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":37.5,"schoolId":98911,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Green Street Academy 377 on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Green Street Academy 377","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/maryland/baltimore-city-public-school-district/green-street-academy/98911"}
