We are using Second Step, a research-based program that promotes the social-emotional development, safety, and well-being of children in our classroom. As our students learn self regulation skills through this program, we will introduce new tools to this designated calm down space. Students can utilize this space when experiencing strong feelings and use the sensory materials to regulate breathing and movement. Our goal is to provide this support within our classroom to normalize all feelings and model appropriate ways to regulate the body and mind. Within the space, students can choose to sit on the carpet or bean bag chair, and use a weighted blanket or stuffed animal for comfort ads well as a fidget or sensory tool to practice their breathing strategies with. Long term, our students will continue to develop social skills and problem solving strategies and feel empowered to use coping strategies in times of stress.
