This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My little ones are beyond special! They are so diverse with rich unique experiences that they unknowingly share with each other in the most special way. A decent amount of our children are immigrants and were refugees from the Middle East, Africa, and Southern Asia. English is the second language for over 50% of my students. There are about eight languages spoken within my classroom. Eight-five percent of the families we serve are low income, and our student population is extremely diverse, consisting mostly of Asian, Hispanic, and black children. My students have a lot to overcome, but they also have a lot to contribute to the world and our country. They are so ready, willing and eager to learn and succeed.
My Project
Being that this is an inclusion classroom, we have a wide range of students with varying sensory needs, which means we are in need of a wide range of therapy and sensory products.
We really want to create a flexible, versatile, soothing, learning environment.
We are looking to add more therapeutic objects to our classroom to assist us in achieving this goal. Our first step is to incorporate more flexible seating options. We want to have more pillows, stools and wobble cushions than chairs so we can meet a larger range of sensory needs.
Adding pillows and kinetic sand to our poll of therapy products will help us better support our students who have tactile needs. They will have the option to cuddle up with a cozy pillow or play with the soothing kinetic sand. The headsets will be available at the technology center for kids who need more auditory support. For the students who have proprioceptive needs, having pencil grips will not only help improve their writing and drawing skills, but the grips will also have a positive affect on their self confidence. The Chewy-E-Chains are perfect for the little ones who have oral sensory needs. No more chewed up pencil erasers and marker lids in this classroom! All these supplies will make a huge difference in student performance, engagement and attitude at school.
