Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

It is very simple. Whenever I ask my kids for the type of books that they wish they could read, the answer always comes back the same. Fantasy and mysteries. I teach three 8th grade classes in a financially strapped school in Brooklyn, NY. My students really don't have the capability to go out and purchase books on their own, so for the overwhelming majority of them, my classroom library is the only access they have to great books. All I am trying to do is keep it filled with the pages that they love to turn - fantasy and mysteries.

To say that my students are interested in fantasy stories would be the understatement of the year! Boys and girls don't agree on many topics in their junior high years - but I have found something they have in common - their love for fantasy stories. Susan Cooper is one of their favorite authors. She writes creative and challenging stories that my students love to get lost in. If they could, I am sure that many of my kids would love to jump into the pages and live in her world for a little while.

Now who doesn't love a gripping page turner with an ending with multiple twists? I am sure of one thing - my classes can't get enough of them! And Caroline Cooney is their favorite author who keeps them reading at the edge of their seats. Many mornings have I seen students roll into class with heavy, dark circles under their eyes from reading chapter after chapter of their favorite Cooney novel. They love the characters she creates, but most of all, they love her surprising twists and turns from the first page to the last.

So help put the books that my kids want the most right into their hands! Fantasy and mystery books are hard to come across in a standard Brooklyn middle school classroom library. With the addition of these books from Cooper and Cooney, I would immediately have the coolest library in the school - which in turn - would give me the happiest students in Brooklyn! All it will take for my kids to become overwhelmingly excited about reading would be more fantasy and mystery stories. YOU can make that happen!
