Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What is the future of energy in our country? How does solar energy convert to useful energy? These are questions I want my students to understand in my chemistry class in order to become knowledge and responsible citizens.

My students are in the 11th grade.

They attend an inner city school in a large district. My school is a small school consisting of 425 students. As a result, we lack resources and funding for class materials. My classes are mixed ability levels, with regular students mixed in with advanced students, struggling students, English learners and students with special needs. As a result, I have to differentiate learning to accommodate all students. My school is a humanities school, meaning we emphasize understanding the big ideas of what we learn. In this unit, students will learn about the limited energy resources we have on our planet.

My Project

The solar energy kit will allow the students to investigate how solar energy is converted to electrical energy. The kits also allow students to see how a natural resource, such as blackberries, have chemicals that are photosensitive. This activity will be part of a series to learn about different alternative energy sources and how each of those energy source can be useful. In addition, students will develop their investigation and inquiry skills through conducting a hands-on lab.

Your donation to this project will enrich student understanding of energy resources in addition to promoting inquiry in the classroom.

It will change students' lives because students will gain a deeper understanding of why energy sources are limited and why alternative energy is important for their future.
