Social Emotional Learning Through Read Alouds

Help me give my students a variety of books, including "Personal Space Camp", "My Mouth is a Volcano", and "Lacey Walker, Nonstop Talker," to help teach social skills. The requested books are based on friendship, feelings, and rules.

My Students

I teach at a Title l school, in a K/1 combination class. My students are made up from a diverse set of backgrounds and include English language learners, special education students and many who receive free or reduced-price lunch. Most importantly, they come to school energetic and ready to learn each day. Each child is working so hard to achieve their best.

The first two years of school is a time when students learn how to get along with their peers, follow school rules, and become good citizens.

They need stories that help introduce social skills such as being a good friend, tattling, manners and differences.

My Project

Beginning Kindergarten/First grade is a big adjustment to many children. Learning to share, following rules, and working in a team can be new and challenging! Addressing problem behaviors and teaching norms within the classroom is essential to creating a community of learners.

Students need to be taught social socials and the importance of being respectful to all students.

Having books related to the themes such as tattling, being kind, making new friends and bullying opens up conversations and allows students to explore how they connect to characters in the story. These stories will be read aloud to the class and then placed in our classroom library.
