My Project

My students bring various skills and abilities to the classroom. They inspire me every day. This is my second year as a special education teacher. I am grateful to serve students in the Academy of Innovation who are passionate about agriculture, engineering, and automotive.

My students have voiced the need for a comfortable space to decompress from academic and non-academic stressors in their lives.

They would like to extend their current reading nook to accommodate recess, lunch, and free time activities. I want to honor their voices by creating a relaxed and comfortable environment, while also helping them build relationships with each other. Providing students with engaging materials such as a standing whiteboard, expo pens, board games, snacks, soft lighting, a handpan, and squishy flooring where they can take a break when they are feeling overwhelmed will help them to manage their stress and foster a sense of belonging and safety at school.

This area will also encourage them to connect without the distraction of cell phones or Chromebooks.
