I became addicted to books at a very early age. I want my students to have that same love of books. However, financial limitations in our community have restricted many students access to books.
We live in a beautiful area of Arkansas-lakes, rivers and mountains surround us.
Unfortunately, our beautiful area is plagued by poverty. Poverty brings with it many negative effects in a child's life: lack of food, abuse, drug abuse, and illiteracy in the parents. Through all of these situations the students are still eager to learn; they want to broaden their world knowledge. Many of them use reading as an escape from their home life.
My Project
The books I have chosen will give students to read new titles by excellent authors. They will have quick access to these books in our classroom library. Having multiple copies of these books will allow us to engage the students in literature circles. Lit circles give students an opportunity to analyze and discuss a book in a peer group and help them build educational relationships.
Many of our students have very little at home and because our district is poor, as well, they sometimes get the "short end of the stick" in supplies at school.
By building a classroom library rich in titles I aim to change that. I hope to open doors for students through reading that they never thought possible.
