Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Dressing vests are a powerful tool for developing manual dexterity in preschoolers because they provide repeated, hands-on opportunities to practice fine motor movements in a playful, low-pressure way.

Skills such as buttoning, zipping, and snapping all require bilateral coordination—using both hands together with different movements—and these vests let children practice those motions in isolation.

As children practice, they strengthen the small muscles in their fingers and hands, which improves overall precision and control. This kind of targeted fine-motor practice supports foundational skills needed not only for dressing but also for later academic tasks like writing, drawing, and cutting.

Using these dressing vests also helps preschoolers build confidence and independence with daily living skills. Because the vests are designed for practice rather than speed, children can take their time to master each fastener without the pressure of getting dressed for a real-life transition. The repetition allows them to internalize the sequence and motions needed to zip coats, button pants, or snap jackets.

Over time, this reduces frustration and increases self-sufficiency during classroom routines. As they experience success on the vest, children are more likely to transfer those skills to their own clothing, leading to smoother transitions, more independence, and a stronger sense of accomplishment.
