For over 5 years, I have - with your generosity - supplied my classroom with a snack cupboard for hungry students! I teach English and History to newcomer immigrant and refugee students at our High School in Seattle. Many of these students and their families struggle with food insecurity. Nearly all of my students live with family members, friends, or guardians who work multiple jobs with grueling schedules. These guardians are often not present in the mornings, so many students arrive at school hungry. Unfortunately, many students also miss breakfast (served only before school starts) and lunch is quite late in the day. Often, my students struggle to make it through the day of learning.
Simply put, there is not enough food for our students to ward off hunger and maintain focus throughout the day.
While I fund some snacks out of my own pocket to give students some energy, this is not financially sustainable given the volume of need. In this project, I'm hoping to continue my ever-popular snack cupboard - which has been a feature of my classroom for many years. This snack cupboard allows me to help my students meet their basic needs so that they can focus on their academics rather than their stomach. I will stock energy bars, crackers, and other snacks to help students get the energy boost they need to engage in learning!
