My students are all recent immigrants and English learners. Some are refugees fleeing war, violence, or political turmoil; others are drawn by educational and economic opportunities. They come to the Bay Area speaking numerous languages, carrying with them inspiring life stories and a wealth of knowledge and experience. Having overcome numerous challenges to immigrate to the United States, my students face many additional hardships as newcomers trying to survive and thrive in a new land. At San Francisco International High School, our goal is to empower our amazing students - who bring so much to our classes - to envision and realize their own success; to develop skills they can use to create change in their own lives and in the communities around them. Having Chromebooks would help all of my students engage in authentic project-based learning, develop computer literacy skills, and build cross-cultural connections that are key to their success. A few examples of how I will use Chromebooks: In my history class (and in advisory), we will use computers to engage in research of real-life community issues and co-create authentic products that we share with community partners. We will also use computers for translation, for developing a robust iterative writing process (with opportunities for revision and peer/self-assessment), and for basic typing practice - as many students arrive in my class having never used a computer before. Chromebooks will also allow students to share their own countries, cultures, and experiences with each other, thereby forming the foundation of cross-cultural friendships. Lastly, we will use Chromebooks in the end-of-semester Portfolios period, where students write reflective essays and prepare presentations about what they learned. Chromebooks will open up new worlds of learning and growth for my students. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to read about my project!
