When the box arrived students walked in with quizzical looks. We unboxed it together and the students really could not believe people out in the world would support our classroom like this. Beyond helping our classroom be a cleaner place, I am hopeful that this experience reminds my students that there are caring community members out in the world who they can also rely on when they become teachers. \r\n\r\nWe were learning about arts based activities last week and working with cutting flower petals out of paper. As you can imagine, the paper bits went EVERYWHERE. Another day two weeks ago we were sharing a bag of popcorn as we debriefed best practices for engaging with students who avoid work and there were bits of popcorn buried in the carpet! The vacuum saved all of us from going on our hands and knees and picking up each bit of paper and popcorn. Students who vacuumed showed the class how much dust and debris they picked up in a short period of time. Everyone was amazed!\r\n\r\nYour impact goes beyond helping students feel more accountable for their messes and providing us with a cleaner classroom environment. It will go on to future generations of teachers and students as my students go on to become classroom teachers.","fullyFundedDate":1767132522412,"projectUrl":"project/vacuum-for-responsibility/9957716/","projectTitle":"Vacuum for Responsibility","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Chinen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp622034_orig.png?crop=429,430,x0,y5&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1694638778257","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/622034"},{"teacherId":1065632,"projectId":9249605,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your support in providing texts for our literature circles. Students are mostly self-managed taking on leadership roles and supporting each other's scholarship. \r\n\r\nRoles include: questioner, evidence hunter, connector, character detective and summarizer, discussion leader...Students will rotate and take on different roles as literature circles meet. Skills involved are finding relevant text evidence, making inferences, examining author's choice (specifically word choice), connecting to schema or other texts, analyzing character, and summarizing. These are critical skills students can apply to all readings across disciplines. \r\n\r\nThese books and this routine allows us to have a reading routine that complements our work on other units that are less reading intensive. After brainstorming and sketching, students then sculpt and air-dry clay sculpture that expresses their chosen idea about love. \r\n\r\nStudents appreciate having the necessary materials to craft their artwork, to make mistakes and learn from them, and ultimately to make a sculpture they are proud of.
