Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Every morning, hundreds of Kinder through 5th grade students enter our doors. Our students live in a high poverty area of our city. Many students come to school and receive free breakfast and lunch each day. However, many families cannot provide additional food for snacks throughout their day.
Little, growing bodies and minds need access to snacks throughout their school day, so they are able to focus on learning and not feeling hungry.
My sensory and wellness room is accessible to all students in our school. Some students come to us to learn coping skills and strategies, others to regulate their bodies, some for a listening ear and to problem solve, and some to sleep and eat. We serve the whole child and will do whatever we can to meet any of their needs. When students share that they are hungry, we like to have a snack basket available for them to that they can choose a snack from. Oftentimes, a simple snack is all it takes to help them feel calm and focused to be able to learn in their classrooms.
