Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh-grade math students are an amazing group of kids! We have built a community of students who are excited to come to school and learn. About 85% of my school's population is economically disadvantaged, which means school is an escape for many of my students. Often times, funding is used for uniforms, extra snacks, and basic school supplies rather than field trips, manipulatives, and technology to help engage our students in higher-level thinking. My inclusion classes have a wide range of student needs, so differentiation and alternative modes of learning are essential.

My students are creative thinkers with a growth mindset.

In seventh grade, the kids are at an age where they are finding out who they are and who they want to be. I strive to empower my students to pave a path for a bright future ahead. They are learning skills in the classroom that will be used in high school, college, and beyond. Teaching my students how to communicate and advocate for themselves is a huge focus in the middle school years. These kids deserve the best!

My Project

My students are hard working and I like to offer incentives for reaching learning goals, outstanding participation, and winning in small math competitions. I have a ticket system in my classroom where students can earn tickets for answering questions or explaining problems. At the end of each week, we have a ticket raffle for prizes. The most popular and requested prizes have been food related.

Students work best when they are energized and focused on their learning.

Providing my students with snacks and rewards will help motivate them and encourage them to reach learning goals.

I host after school tutoring and STEM club. I always give the kids a chance to wind down from the school day and have a snack before we begin working. This has been a great way to build a safe space where students want to be and they choose to be there!
