I teach in a low-income neighborhood school that was unfortunately in the Hurricane Harvey impact zone. Our community received over 50 inches of water in about a 24 hour period. Many of our students are English language learners which can be challenging. These students benefit from hands-on learning, which helps foster language acquisition and mathematics skills.
This year, before school started, Hurricane Harvey hit our area and water was in 80-90% of the homes in our town.
My children have very little to begin the school year with. I would like for them to have as normal of a school year as possible. I love teaching these children because they are eager to learn even with all the devastation, they have seen in their little lives.
My Project
This year Hurricane Harvey came though our area and nearly 90% of the homes in our district were damaged. As a result, the children in our community now live in either damaged / gutted homes, hotels or campers in their yard. Our classroom would benefit from the rug I am requesting because our current rug is in an almost unusable state. We would also like to have a ten frame rug to help us learn to add, subtract and subitize.
In addition, we would like to have snacks afternoons- this will help the children have a little something extra in their tummies before they go home for the afternoon.
We would also like to have the writing boards to add some excitement and "want to" to the writing center. I feel that these would make writing fun and exciting!
Lastly, we would like to have a paper storage area so that the children can keep track of their papers. All of these items will help to restore our classroom to a place where children want to come and learn each day.
