Snacks and Popcorn to Foster Mental Health

Help me give my students popcorn and snacks to make them important and cared for. Most of my students come to school hungry. Being able to fix them popcorn or snacks makes them feel loved, cared for.

My Project

Popcorn and other snacks can be surprisingly helpful for supporting the mental health of high school students, especially when chosen wisely. Teens are at a critical stage in their brain development, and the foods they consume can have a significant impact on their mood, focus, energy, and stress levels.

Popcorn is a whole grain, which means it contains fiber that helps keep blood sugar levels stable, preventing mood swings and providing sustained energy throughout the school day.

Low in calories: Popcorn can be a healthy snack option if prepared without too much butter or sugar, making it a light snack that won’t cause energy crashes.

Magnesium:

Popcorn contains small amounts of magnesium, which plays a role in reducing anxiety and improving mood.

Easy to make: It’s simple to prepare, portable, and can be a satisfying snack during long study sessions or between classes.

Oatmeal is made from whole grains, which are complex carbohydrates. This means they digest slowly, releasing glucose (the brain's main fuel source) steadily over time. Stable blood sugar levels are key to maintaining focus, mood, and energy throughout the day, reducing irritability and mental fatigue.

In addition they are high in Fiber, and can help support brain health which play a significant role in reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

My students had me add gatorade because earlier in the year we were funded water machine and it would be super cool to add to water. Additional snacks for kids to have something special. Most our kids are always hungry and being able to have snacks not only feeds them but makes them feel that you care which is so important to young students mental health.
