My students are so excited about the books that have been added to our classroom library. As you are already aware choice reading is foundational when having students fall in love with reading. Reading independently for an extended amount of time has proven to not only build reading stamina, but also prolong attention spans in general. \r\n\r\nIn my classroom reading is the core of everything that we do. My students in my sophomore classes read independently for 15 minutes twice a week at minimum. Meanwhile, my Reading for Pleasure classes read 35 minutes every day. Once those students are done with their independent reading they journal about what they read before meeting with a partner to share their thoughts.\r\n\r\nMany of my students have been really excited about the new graphic novels in particular. This is a policy that I wholeheartedly believe in because even just a few moments of missed instruction can lead to a student feeling lost, helpless, and frustrated with an assignment or class. If these feelings persist, students tend to \"check out\" mentally. \r\n\r\nOn the other hand, I know -from personal experience- that the Snickers candy bar commercials hit the nail on the head with their slogan: \"you aren't you when you're hungry\". I produce my WORST work when I'm hungry, and it would be unfair of me to expect differently of my students. That is why I did this project and how I will use the resources. This would include basketball games, pep assemblies, and different field trips to the elementary schools in our district. Our favorite equipment are the bass drum stands. Instead of the bass drums having to wear their bass drum for an entire pep assembly or basketball game, they can now just rest their drums on the stands. I have noticed that they now have more energy while playing. \r\nMy students were very shocked when their equipment came in. In the band world, the percussion section gets easily forgotten about so they had no words!!! With this project we were able to get two bass drum stands. Many of them have completed full novels and I have had several wanting sequels or extra types of certain books. The student loves picking these and signing their names to them. \r\n\r\nThe students are well into reading this novel now.
