These materials and tools will give us a variety of different fiber art instruction from Art I to Art IV. These materials can be passed to other Art teachers in the building to use in their classrooms as well. Weaving is a meditative process and working with yarn and beads is a grounding activity. The repetitive nature of weaving and the ability to carry on a conversation while weaving makes this media a perfect daily activity in the midst of chaos. The more looms we have the better we are able to space students out and follow safety protocols. The variety of different kinds of looms allows students to choose an art product that fits their aesthetic and style. Many different cultures have many different weaving techniques and motifs. These looms would allow us to bring awareness to and teach appreciation of these cultures.
To help my students learn amid the pandemic, I could use the requested materials to maximize in person instruction, create variety in weaving lessons and allow students to choose different types of looms to create a beautiful woven product. Students will be more motivated to be in class to weave. Meditative, creative art would be healing for our students. This repetitive art would create more opportunities for open communication amongst students, something that is sorely needed at this time.
To make an upcoming unit more engaging, my students would love the artwork they create and see how hard work pays off. Sticking with a project that takes several days would encourage them to have good work habits and completion of a goal.
To bring my dream learning activity to life, I’d love to get a variety of looms, yarn and materials used for weaving in a fiber arts unit.
