Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach four-year-old kindergarten in a large urban public school district in Wisconsin. Currently, our entire school district receives free breakfast and lunch. Our 25 students attend full-day K4. We have several special needs students who receive services and students who come to school speaking little or no English.
Our school has wonderful parents who participate in their child's educational experiences and value education as an important part of their child's success in the future.
Our classrooms are for regular education and special education children. It is a wonderful, inclusive environment for children!
Because our K4 program is "school board-funded" and K4 is not required by Wisconsin law, we receive no additional funds for anything. We are underfunded and we are recovering from the monetary consequences of COVID-19.
My Project
In an effort to slow the spread of Covid, I have decided to supply snacks this year for my students. We eat lunch early in the day so by 3:00 pm they are hungry for a snack. Previously our students took turns bringing a snack for the class. Because of Covid I wanted to cut down on the number of times and people that were touching our snacks. In addition, this year I have students with allergies and religious dietary restrictions. Children learn best when they are fed. I thought it would be easier for me to bring them, but the cost really adds up.
Please help me provide daily snacks for my students.
They really look forward to snack time before they go home. In addition, if someone goes into quarantine or we go virtual, I can send snacks home with the children who need them.
