The materials have been especially helpful during play-based language activities and speech sound practice. One of my favorite moments was watching students use the new materials and create their own place scenarios while practicing vocabulary, describing, requesting, and taking turns. \r\n\r\nMy students have been so excited! They immediately want to explore everything and seeing their excitement made it clear how valuable having new, engaging resources can be in a school setting. \r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue incorporating these materials into our speech and language activities throughout the school year. We will use them to build vocabulary, expand sentences, practice social communication and conversation skills, and support speech sound development. I am especially excited to continue using them in play-based activities with my younger students, where we can work on communication skills in a natural and enjoyable way. Students communicate through gestures, facial expressions, pictures, AAC devices, sounds, and other forms of communication. The excitement they showed when the snacks arrived—smiles, gestures, sounds, and pointing—gave them opportunities to express preferences and make choices.\r\n\r\nWe use snack time to practice communication, requesting, turn-taking, following directions, independence, and social skills. A simple choice between Pringles and fruit snacks can become an important opportunity to communicate and make an independent decision.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping us create a classroom where every student feels supported, valued, and heard. I was able to use the supplies the week they came and am already on my second project with students. \r\n\r\nIt so nice to offer my students a wide range of supply options - it makes them even more excited to start a project. I was then able to use my own money, that didn't need to be used for the basics, to buy some of the special request items students asked for. \r\n\r\nSince this project was funded, I happen to have heard a few of conversations about how kids and young adults never learned to sew. I am happy to report that I am here to teach them! \r\n\r\nFunding entire projects is so helpful for teachers. We don't have to wait and see if we can do the work we are trying to do. And there is SO much work we do. Full funding means we can get what we need and move forward teaching children. We had a great 6 week after school program where 21 students learned to play games they never had before and ended with 15 students taking a game home to share with their friends and family.\r\n\r\nBoard games allow students to engage in problem solving, practice listening and reading skills, and exercise healthy competition. There are so many styles of games that many students do not think to try because they are intimidated by coast or ability understand the game play. These materials promote learning in a play based manner, which is one of the best ways for students to learn language. The materials from your donation will be used for many years and with many students. The language and turn taking skills the students will learn from these materials are invaluable.
