SLP Needs Vibrant, Diverse Stories to Teach Literacy & Language

Help me give my students the chance to learn valuable skills through literacy-based intervention. These books will help us learn skills such as inferencing, predicting and sequencing in the context of wonderful vibrant stories.

My Students

Hello! I am a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) at 3 public schools in Denver. I work with students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, including 2 center programs (one for students with significant support needs, and one for Autistic students). My students all receive speech-language intervention through special education at school. Each of them have incredible gifts and talents that they bring to our sessions -- some are amazing readers, some have an abundance of knowledge about very specific interests, some love to interact with people and are always joyful, and others are persevering through really difficult situations, both at school and at home. The one commonality between all of my students is that they are all learning to communicate their thoughts and needs more effectively. Many of them are starting to see how wonderful it can be to connect with others, whether that means saying 'hello' to a new friend using an AAC device, knowing the sequence of their favorite movie so that they can re-tell it to mom or dad, or learning the language to have a meaningful career conversation with a school counselor.

My Project

Literacy-based intervention has been shown to be a highly effective method of teaching for students with speech-language impairments. But--not every picture book is worthy! I have spent significant time compiling picture books that have opportunities for students to make inferences, predict possible endings, identify the problem in the story, brainstorm possible solutions, label a character's feelings and emotions, and so much more! I am excited to incorporate stories and literature into each therapy session. Students will be able to spend multiple sessions working with the same book, which will enhance their comprehension and give them many opportunities to manipulate the language of the book.

In my experience, when students enjoy a story, they are more likely to remember the takeaways.

For example, they will hold onto the salient vocabulary they learned or the characters' emotional journey. Your contribution to this project will also ensure I have books that represent diverse characters, so that my students are able to see themselves in the stories.
