Literacy-based intervention has been shown to be a highly effective method of teaching for students with speech-language impairments. But--not every picture book is worthy! I have spent significant time compiling picture books that have opportunities for students to make inferences, predict possible endings, identify the problem in the story, brainstorm possible solutions, label a character's feelings and emotions, and so much more! I am excited to incorporate stories and literature into each therapy session. Students will be able to spend multiple sessions working with the same book, which will enhance their comprehension and give them many opportunities to manipulate the language of the book. In my experience, when students enjoy a story, they are more likely to remember the takeaways. For example, they will hold onto the salient vocabulary they learned or the characters' emotional journey. Your contribution to this project will also ensure I have books that represent diverse characters, so that my students are able to see themselves in the stories.
