SLANT-Ecosystem

My students need the kits on the Soil, Shore, and the Wild Fire Ecology to teach the Ecosystem, and various Art supplies to integrate Art into SLANT.

My Students

The integration of the Arts into the study of the Ecosystem has many applications from Drama, Music, and Drawing. Using the various areas of Art and Science enables the students to become "Stewards of the Environment".

Presently I teach 60, 6th grade students in a public school where students learn Chinese as a first language.

When the students enter 6th grade, it is the first time that they are learning Science in English. Our garden recently received a renovation that includes an outside classroom. The garden enhances instruction in the area of the Ecosystem. To help guide the students through this process, the students participate in Project Based Learning, Hands on Activities, along with an Interactive Notebook to develop their Scientific Literacy. Over the years, my students have been supported by numerous grants. Donors Choose, has enabled my students to experience enriched curriculum in Social Studies, Science, and Language Arts.

My Project

There are specific 6th grade California Standards that are addressed in this unit on the Ecosystem. The first standard that is addressed is the number and types of organisms an Ecosystem can support depends on the resources available and on abiotic factors, such as quantities of light and water, a range of temperatures, and soil composition. The second standard addressed is the students know the different kinds of organisms may play similar ecological roles in similar biomes. Having the kits on the Shores, Soil, and Fire Ecology, and the Art supplies will enable the students to demonstrate the connection within SLANT to address the standards aligned to the study of the Ecosystem.

This past summer I participated in a workshop called SLANT-Science, Literacy, Art, Integrating Technology, with the Deyoung Museum, Academy of Science, and SFUSD.

While in studio time, I developed a unit on the Ecosystem with the California Standards. Integrating these content areas will make the Ecosystem come alive for the students and meet the various needs through an Interactive Notebook that ties into Science Literacy and the Arts.
