This project was a HIT for the third and fourth graders. In the first lesson, students learned about the medicinal properties of plants in the garden (yarrow, mallow, rosemary, mugwort, and calendula), and picked a few of them to make a plant infusion (dried plants soaked in olive oil). The plants soaked for a week, for the medicinal properties to infuse into the olive oil.\r\n\r\nDuring the second lesson, students strained the plants out of the oil, and added beeswax to the oil, in a glass measuring cup. The cup was placed in a pot of boiling water, for the beeswax and oil to melt together. Meanwhile, students got to pick their own essential oil flavor for their lip balm: orange, lemon, mint, or lavender. They added 10 drops of their flavor to the bottom of their tins. They also decorated the tins of their lip balm. Some simply decorated their lid, while others made creative names, including \"the mighty orange\", \"lemon bomb\", \"rizzler\", \"Messi\" (the athlete), and \"the herb turkey\" (!?!?!). When the beeswax was melted, an adult poured the liquid lip balm into the tins. When it hardened, students were excited to use it right away, applying it to their skin. \"Yay, this is good for my eczema!\"\r\n\r\nThis was a wonderful project to end the 2024-25 school year.
