My Students

I am beyond lucky to teach at a school full of students who are not only motivated, but thoughtful and funny, too! The students actively seek out teachers, support staff and administrators to form positive relationships with. Two years ago, they threw a massive "party" to thank our campus cop for everything he does for them. They played his favorite music and all cheered for him! They know I like puns, and they will go out of their way to swing by at lunch or email me with funny ones relative to what we're learning in class! They write me and other teachers little notes, birthday cards, etc. They even threw me a baby shower last year! Their thoughtfulness extends to academics in the classroom too; they love collaborating on labs and looking for ways they can improve their environment (both at school and in the community/world). Recently we held a wastewater treatment competition - the students were given the task of developing a contraption that would clean dirty water. A group of students was so interested in the task, they went home and made their own dirty water to try out extra techniques to perfect their design. Great passion!

My Project

One of the best ways for students to make connections between complicated topics in our Environmental Science class is to draw out the processes. Similarly, in our Chemistry class, we are working on developing models of atoms and reactions - things that can't be seen with the naked eye. Studies have also shown drawing helps solidify understanding of concepts. These dry erase crayons allow the students to draw directly on our lab benches - which adds an additional level of excitement to the activity because they think they're getting to do something cool, exciting and "not allowed." :) In our Environmental Science class, students draw out the biogeochemical cycles to understand how carbon is transferred between reservoirs and molecular nitrogen gets converted to usable forms in the soil. In chemistry class, students practice drawing Bohr models to understand which electrons are transferred or shared in chemical bonds, as well as drawing out Lewis dot structures to determine the 3D geometry of common compounds. Both classes are also asked to draw system models to help explain complicated processes like the creation of smog, depletion of good ozone, how changing surface area affects reaction rate, or constructing an explanation of how a steam-cleaned tanker could implode.
