Having Kill-A-Watt meters will allow my students to compare the electricity use of different household appliances when they are in use/turned off. They will be able to identify "ghost appliances" - appliances that still draw a lot of electricity even when turned off. Since electricity created from nonrenewable resources releases a lot of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere (the main culprit of global climate change), if students can identify the biggest uses of electricity in their lives, they can discuss and make informed choices about how to modify their lifestyles (should they use the biggest electricity draining appliances less? Should they install power strips they can unplug when the devices aren't in use? etc). to help curb emissions.
